Brooklyn Park’s Environmental Initiatives: A Commitment to Sustainability

Brooklyn Park has been at the forefront of environmental sustainability, implementing several initiatives to promote a greener community.

Solar Energy Projects

In 2019, the city completed the largest solar installation among Minnesota municipalities. Solar panels were installed at multiple city facilities, generating over 1.5 megawatts of electricity annually—enough to power approximately 200 households. This project is projected to save taxpayers more than $5.5 million over 25 years. Learn more about the solar project.

Organics Recycling Program

Recognizing that about 25% of garbage consists of organic material suitable for composting, Brooklyn Park offers a curbside organics recycling program. Residents can recycle food scraps, food-soiled paper, and certified compostable products, thereby reducing landfill waste and producing nutrient-rich compost. Find out how to participate in organics recycling.

Electric Mobility Initiatives

In collaboration with Hennepin County, Brooklyn Park is exploring transportation electrification to provide more mobility options and economic opportunities. This initiative aims to develop strategies for electric vehicle infrastructure and promote sustainable transportation solutions. Read about the electric mobility project.

Through these efforts, Brooklyn Park demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
