The Brooklyn Park City Council is deliberating a substantial increase in the mayor’s annual salary, proposing a raise from the current $21,995 to $50,000. This proposal also includes the elimination of the existing $50 per meeting supplement.
Council Member Christian Eriksen, who introduced the proposal, highlighted the unique demands placed on the mayor compared to other council members. He noted that the mayor’s role requires a level of flexibility and commitment that may not be compatible with certain occupations, emphasizing the opportunity cost for individuals considering the position.
Under this proposal, the salaries of the six non-mayoral council members would remain unchanged. The council is expected to vote on this matter in an upcoming meeting.
