Brooklyn Park’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Brooklyn Park’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Brooklyn Park has been actively implementing initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and reduce its ecological footprint. These efforts encompass solar energy projects, organics recycling programs, and the exploration of electric mobility options.

Solar Energy Initiatives

In 2019, Brooklyn Park completed the largest solar installation among Minnesota cities. Solar panels were installed at multiple city facilities, including operations and maintenance buildings, the Community Activity Center, the police station, the central fire station, and the water treatment plant. These installations generate over 1.5 megawatts of electricity annually, sufficient to power approximately 200 households. This project is projected to save taxpayers more than $5.5 million over 25 years. Learn more about the solar project.

Organics Recycling Program

Brooklyn Park offers an organics recycling program to reduce waste and promote composting. Residents can recycle food scraps, food-soiled paper, and certified compostable products. Weekly organics recycling collection coincides with regular garbage and recycling days. Materials must be placed in BPI-certified compostable bags, with a limit of five bags per person per day. Electric Mobility Exploration

In 2023, Brooklyn Park collaborated with the EPA to explore transportation electrification opportunities. A workshop involving residents, businesses, and government representatives was held to discuss potential solutions. This initiative aims to provide more mobility options and economic opportunities for the community. Read about the electric mobility exploration.

Through these initiatives, Brooklyn Park demonstrates its commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of its residents.
